LaDonna's Papercutting and Framing Idea...

This is such a neat craft display idea that I just had to share it. My friend, LaDonna is an amazing papercutter. Her work is far superior to mine, so different in style and... amazing. They are more like paper sculptures, where the flowers she makes are 3D!! You really must go see. She also has her work published in a book. You can see more about that on the blog.

Anyway, she posted this idea on her blog, and I thought to pass it on to you. Seems rather simple, and that works for me.

Go see her post here on Framed Vintage Silverware. I would love to use this idea. While I do not have a beautiful selection of vintage knives as she has, I would certainly be able to find scissors or some other such lovely to use instead. ;-)

That is all for now. You may be wondering why I am not sticking to ONLY papercuts on this blog... well, this is my place to share what interests me as well, is it not? I love literature and the written word, crafts of all kinds and such, which is why I call my blog what it is... Wordlets (words and outlets) and Craftivities (crafts and activities)...

From 2008... Old Art Found And Now Included...

Starting out in papercutting, I asked a couple of artists if I could try to copy their work to build my skills. One was Cindy at Scherenschnitte. She was a TREMENDOUS encouragement in the first couple years of learning. I asked her questions, and she was kind enough to answer as best she could. I used mostly her pieces, at the time, for practice, since she was so proactive in her assistance and because her work is so admirable, but I did also do some from a couple other people.

Because I was just getting the handle of things back then, including labeling everything... I have NO idea where I got this from. I made NO mention on the back as to where I got it, and I am so sorry about that. If you recognize this piece, please let me know so I can give credit where credit is due. I have tried to search online, but have not been able to find the source.

I LOVE this papercut. I gave it to my mother-in-law for her 70th birthday card in July of 2008. I recall not including it in my scanned art because it was not my own design, but now that I look at it, it is a pretty good replica for a beginner.

Please ask for permission before using someone else's art. :-) And, label whatever you DO use so you do remember the source. That is said from experience. Oh, the things we learn on our creative journey. Hahah...

Current Redirected Inspiration... Snowflake Art...

I have found new inspiration!! My interest in papercutting has been redirected for the time being to papercut snowflakes! Even my kids are following suit, as can be seen by the many creations now decorating our windows and glass doors!! Art for a house to wear! NICE!

Here are the ones that I have created so far. I got the idea from a few contacts on Flickr. They created not just various snowflake forms but movement and people and LIFE. I did not think I could do it, but... I did! They have been surprisingly easier to create than I expected. I am very happy with them.

You will notice that Snowflake Art #5 is missing from the group. That is because it is being used for another project, which I will post about when it is complete and ready to show. For now, here you go! :-)

A Post On... "How to Feel Miserable As An Artist"...

I know. I know. I have not posted in a while. I was just going write here to tell you what I have been up to when I found something I just had to share. You see, I have been feeling a little, hm, not uninspired as I have LOTS of ideas, as much as unmotivated, to create adn accomplish them. I have been doing creative things just not in my usual avenues. I have some projects that are way overdue, and yet, even with my mental coaching of "finish what you start", I cannot seem to get there. Sigh... I am sorry. So sorry. I want to do more, but life is getting in the way bigtime.

You see, we have moved our little apartment-like living space into a house living space, and I have been spending time getting everything in order. We have ordered furniture, recieved said furniture, spent time cleaning the dust that seems to always come back as if I have not cleaned it before, and just trying to settle in.

Like I said, I have been creative, but just not in normal ways. Positioning furniture perfectly is an art, I believe. hahah... But aside from that I have been brainstorming a design to have etched in the marble that will go on our marble steps landing. I made my youngest son a bookmark to fill up his empty side table a little bit. I am in baking mode, with Thanksgiving prodding me to comfort foods. And I have been planning out where to put pictures, thinking of plots and story lines for a kids' book I would like to write. And... Hm... there are so many little things that have been scattered throughout my days, but nothing to show for it. I have also slacked in my picture-taking. NO! I know!

My husband has accomplished cementwork, and a VERY original island for our kitchen. Of course I had my say, but he put it together.

So, that is more or less what I have been up to...

Now, I would like to refer you to THIS POST that Dave wrote. He does not reference these words, as they are not his own, but... they are brilliant, and a wonderful and much needed reminder to me. Hope they are to YOU as well.

Busy Crafting For My Son...

I have not been papercutting very much, but I have been keeping busy. In these days I have been making things to keep my nearly-four-year-old son happy. The other day he was sad that he did not have as many things in his bedside table like his older brothers, and to help him add something fun to his I made him a bookmark with some scraps of paper, an ad with an image that resembles Superman, and a sock tag that had the image of Lightning McQueen on it. Together it turned out to be one of his favorite items, and he doesn't even read yet. When he started leaving it lying around, I put it in his bedside table drawer for him to rediscover at another time.

Today my second son made this not-a-toddler-anymore son of mine a dinosaur out of paper, but it was flimsy enough that when he tried to play with it, the foot broke off. So... I stablized it on an old cereal box and then cut it out again. But... the foot broke off again,even so. He got really upset, so I decided to go a bit more drastic in saving this dino. I got another old cereal box, took apart the seam, colored some scenery on the gray side all around it, taped up the seam again, taped the dino on the scenery and then taped the entire box across all of the colored "torso". It did not have the top or bottom flaps. I cut those off before. But the whole "torso" of the box was intact. After taping it all together, it stood on its own, and the dino was no longer in danger of extinction at the grubby hands of my rough boy. He watched Ice Age with it nearby, even as he held two other toy dinos, and he placed it standing up, cereal-box-style on his nightstand when he took a nap. He even realized he could use it to put on his head as a hat, of sorts. It has been a very nice toy to distract him with today.

Katy’s Homecoming by author Kim Vogel Sawyer was released in February 2011 by Zondervan (zondervan.com). This is #3 in a series about Katy Lambright, an Old Order Mennonite girl.

In this book Katy has been given the opportunity that others may have only dreamed of: to go to a normal, public high school in Salina. While she has been given permission by the elders of her Mennonite order, this permisson has only been given for her sophomore year, and the possibility of continuing depends wholly on IF she can maintain her strict system of beliefs without being affected by the world with which she will confront.

Katy is a normal teenager with a strong belief system that is challenged by the coming remarriage of her dad, relationships changing, and losing focus of prioritites. Now, as she begins a new adventure in Salina High School, she will have to face a world that will try to discourage her by scheming lies and unkindness, trickery, unwarranted hatred, being made fun of, peer pressure, and numerous other ways of making another feel badly. The biggest surprise is when she is elected as part of the Homecoming Court. How can she find the balance of wanting to be beautiful to her new friends and the boy with whom she has a crush while still being true to what she knows in her heart is real and best? Questions and doubts thrust her into a full battle of heart and soul as she needs to decide if she will give into her personal desires or choose as would be most pleasing to God. Being different from what the world likes or expects comes with a price, and for Katy that means choosing the comfort, integrity, and security of traditional faith or walking away from it all, if even for one day. But, would it truly be for only one day? Regarding this there is a constant nagging concern in her heart that does not seem to be subdued easily… When the two worlds of the Old Order Mennonite community and Salina High School collide, Katy will be confronted with what really matters in friendship, boys, and faith, and what she decides will have a profound change on her future.

The author, Kim Vogel Sawyer, shows brilliant insight into the conflicts involved in a preteen or early teen girl’s life. Elements such as these are scattered within the pages: Dealing with temptation, wrong versus right, faith and integrity versus materialism and worldliness, not judging by appearance, selfishness versus servanthood, and how to deal with first feelings of a crush. The importance of manners and behaviours even to those not liked or trusted was one I felt worth the notice, by the way.

I, surprisingly, found myself paralleling Katy’s Mennonite upbringing with my own strict upbringing. I found many of her sentiments and feelings reflected in my own, many I have experienced myself when facing challenges, especially regarding growing up. The emotional ups and downs of crushes and learning about true love, handling trust delicately, honesty even when it hurts, friendship, servanthood, and walking out faith no matter what, are each elements that have rung true in my own life.

I was not initially excited to read this book, but I was very pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it so much. Katy has become a friend with whom I very much wish I could know more about. I wish I had the entire series, and I would wholly allow my daughter to read this and know that she was facing truth with a good dose of persistent faith. I am honored to have this book to hand down to my daughter. I was blessed in the reading of it, as some of the lessons within, though meant for a young girl, are timeless and a great reminder to my own heart.

Katy has great plans for the summer. With school out and her best friend, Shelby, staying with her for 6 weeks due to a broken leg and not being able to attend a mission trip with her family, many memory-making activities are in their minds to do; but Katy and Shelby are forced to reevalute their priorities when tragedy hits the Lambright family and the Old Order Mennonite community. When Aunt Rebecca is diagnosed with cancer, all plans are postponed and their focus is put to helping to run Aunt Rebecca’s fabric store while she goes through surgery, treatments, chemotherapy, and healing.

There are challenges to their new responsiblities, but the girls take it all on together; but then some other challenges approach that have Katy swirling with doubt and indecision. Three boys- who is best for her and her faith… her future? She is dealing with feelings so very new to her, and there is so much to consider. As summer nears to its close, and school is looming in the not-too-distant future, Katy is concerned about all she has worked for regarding her own life. Will she be able to go back to Salina High School? That depends on the elders and how soon Aunt Rebecca can return to the store. And what about her desire to be a journalist? And even after Katy has made her decision about one of the boys, the questions continue to come. Is he the one? He seems to have so many of the valuable qualities that mean so much to her, but… Unless a particular change occurs, even he is not a definite, even though she wants him to be. What to do? Here is another test of faith as trials mount and seem hopeless; but, there are also some surprises that God has in store for her. He is faithful.

Once again, Kim Vogel Sawyer has enchanted us with Katy Lambright. Her Salina and Old Order Mennonite worlds conflict and create some very interesting situations, some that will made me feel like crying with Katy, and others that made me laugh. All in all, it was a very enjoyable journey. Themes like “doing the right thing is hard sometimes”, heart tug-of-wars and crushes, learning to appreciate and care for a new stepmom, loving someone even when it is tough, accepting others even with their differences, and the importance of prayer in all decision-making are seen throughout the contents of this story. I would like to also make a point of mentioning the importance of good role models and supporters, of mentors and encouragers, to scatter their wisdom, love, and care through the trials. Even though Katy was cautious in what she let go to her heart, she was surrounded by others who were praying for her to have God’s wisdom to make the right decisions, those who could just give a hug of support, or those who just listened to her as she spoke. May we all have God bless us in such a way, with such as these.

I was particularly struck by the possiblity of Katy having to “let go of her dreams”. I, myself, had to deal with a time very similar to that in the feelings she expressed. I came to this conclusion: In Katy’s words, “First of all, I prayed. A lot. I wanted to make sure it was something I was even supposed to pursue. I knew I couldn’t be happy following my dream if my dream wasn’t what God wanted for me.” When I gave my dreams to God, after He did quite a bit of convincing and encouraging, I was amazed to be relieved. The weight of even my childhood-to-adult dreams had added a weight to me that I could not even understand. When I gave it all to Him, He blessed me with peace and such relief to leave it all “in His capable hands”.

At the end of reading this book, this verse clung to my brain, “All things work together for good for those who are in Christ.” Along with the verse “There is a time for everything…”, they sum up the basic messages of this story.

2 Anniversaries Card...

Called: Semblance of My Self-Portrait (I tried, but it is not easy to do a profile of myself, on my own. hahaha... Besides... I still like it.)

Mid September marked three very important events in our lives. One is not pleasant to remember, but is never forgotten. September 11... Twin Towers. I will never forget.

But then we also have two other anniversaries that have had their mix of challenges, but have also been a wonderful blessing, too. My husband and I celebrated 12 years of marriage, and on the same day also celebrated 8 years of living here in Italy.

I am convinced now more than ever of God's faithfulness and goodness, in good as well as difficult times. Through each hard time He sustained us, and He has directed and helped us every step of the way.

I love you, A!! I am so grateful that the Lord brought us together. May He "bless us, protect us, make His face shine upon us, be gracious to us, and give us His peace." (Numbers 6:24-26) May He continue to guide and direct us into His perfect way and give us soft hearts to be open to His will, and ears to hear. Amen.

A Visual Prayer To Those In Our Armed Forces...

This card was created for my nephew's friend who just left for the war. This was created in hopes of encouraging him and as a reminder of God's love for him.

This card was also created as a reminder to me, to us, to pray for them. They need our prayers, interceding for their safety, souls, and well-being. They need God to minister to their hearts when they are lonely, afraid, sad, hurting. We cannot be there, but God is everywhere. May He take our love-and-care words and grow fruit for His kingdom, strength in weakness, hope in trial, and moments of encouragement to remind them that they are indeed thought of and loved. Let us not forget them, please. They are our husbands, fathers, brothers, uncles, cousins, friends... They are wives, mothers, sisters, aunts, as well. They are valued and needed and missed...

May the Lord "bless them... keep them... make His face shine upon them... be gracious to them... and give them peace."

A World Of Dinosaurs: From The Rooftop... Son's Birthday...

My oldest son celebrated his 10th birthday. I am amazed that time has flown so quickly. I am overwhelmed at it, as before I know it, He will be grown and living a life of his own. I miss them, my kids, already, and they are still here with me. I ache to hold on to all of the memories and to never forget. I battle to let go of the negative to leave plenty of room for love, joy, and hope to grow in our hearts.

Thank You, Lord, for my family. Thank You for my son, A. You have a purpose and a plan for him that is lovely and good. Minister to A's heart to trust in, cling to, rely on, and believe in You. I know You are all I need, and I long for him to know that as well for himself. Protect him, Lord. He needs You. Bless him, Jesus. And, help him to see his value through Your eyes, his purpose through Your guidance, His abilities as opportunities to lay at Your feet. I love You, Jesus. I love you, A.

Ecclesiastes 4:12b says, "A three-strand cord is not easily broken."

My husband and I are part of a "three-strand cord". The main source is our God who IS Love. His love reaches forth individually to each of us and binds us together. No matter the storms or hard times of this life, as we stay within His love, there is hope; and He will protect us. He grows His love in each of us so we can love each other better, and it flows over into our love for our children.

Each flower represents each blessing He has given to us- the ones we're able to watch bloom and grow, and the one waiting for us in Jesus' arms.

We are blessed; I know that. I am blessed; I know that.

February 8, 2011... An Obedience Cut...

Titled: Blooming Hope

You know... one thing I have learned in my walk of faith is... when the Lord directs you to do something, obey, without analyzing, doubting, questioning, giving conflicting advice to yourself, etc... I mean, if you KNOW that you KNOW that you KNOW what you are to do, do it with all your heart- even if the world will think you are crazy.

I do it often, my husband just mentioned this observation yesterday as I relayed to him what I was up to. I want to be so sensitive to God's voice that I do and know that I have to do it and go- point blank. I have asked the God to help me have a childlike faith, and I think this is one area He has often challenged me to do just that. Trust and faith.

So, a year ago I had a feeling to do something. I did ask God, "um, is that Your voice, or me just imagining it?" I asked for confirmation for the task I felt that I needed to accomplish. Not for doubt, but to secure the purpose in my brain. He knows me, and He knows that I do not want to do something in His name that is not of Him; and I sure hate messing up. So... He gave me confirmation.

What was it, you may be asking? What was it that He put on my heart about a year ago, that I am JUST getting to? sigh...

I have two actors on my heart. Yup. I have been praying and interceding for them. One is an old classic movie actress, and the other is a young comedic sort. Either way, they have become a constant, pressing topic of prayer for me. And, I felt almost a year ago to make a card for the elderly actress and send it to her. Hm.

Now, yes, you may think I am crazy, but... I would remind you, what am I really losing by trying? I could effect positive change for Jesus by simply obeying His voice. I don't know the lives of others. I do not know what my simple act can accomplish. I DO know that I will receive "WHY would you do that?" in very dubious and critical tones. Already have (from someone other than my husband, just to be clear). But, I WILL obey my Jesus. I will practice obedience in the small things, so I can be faithful to obey in the big.

So, here it is. Almost a year later after asking God to give me inspiration for a card, as... if the desire came from Him, I sure wanted the whole subject to continue under Him and not be directed by my hand. This is HIS deal. I am just an instrument. The other day, the idea just flowed from my hands, and when it was complete, I knew it is for her.

I Googled the lead I had to an address for her. As you must know that lots of lies are spread on the internet, and I wanted to be careful to have what I thought would be the REAL thing. So...I believe I have found the address, and just sent it out this morning.

May God heal her heart from sin's ravaging and pain. May He save her heart and bring her rest in His presence. May He do so also with you, dear one.

I hope you will pray for ANYONE that God puts on your heart. You just never know how He will use those very words from your heart. He knows who needs someone to intercede. He knows the details, I am just an itty-bitty part of His grand plan. Help me pray for this card to reach her and touch her heart. Won't you?

This is a book review for Roadside Assistance by Amy Clipston. To be released May 2011.

Emily Curtis is 16 years old, misunderstood, judged by her appearance and chosen hobbies, and is very lonely and hurting. She is dealing with a lot of change and tragedy all at the same time, such as the death of her mother and her boyfriend breaking up with her. Her usual coping method of working on cars is not proving to be fulfilling through recent challenges, and she has an emptiness that simply will not be subdued. It seems as if she has stalled to a stop and is signalling S.O.S., but no one is able to understand her needs. And, the worst and biggest problem is that she has forgotten how to pray. It is almost as if she has “spiritual laryngitis”.

Through unexpected friendships with her cousin, Whitney; Zander, the boy next door; and her new school friend, Chelsea, Emily learns to have faith and to open up her heart to trust and to love again. When yet another challenge comes her way, she finds the strength, courage, and will to heal. She is renewed and given a brand new hope as she leans on God, and she finds the void in her heart and her needs filled in God’s perfect way.

Being a teen is a stage in life so full of conflicting emotions, feelings, drama, and challenge. Amy Clipston captures the very essence of these throughout these pages. I recognized many feelings, insecurities, struggles, and doubts from my own life, and I was blessed to see how the messages within the story spoke to me of “When we are weak, He is strong”… God makes “beauty for ashes”… And God’s ability and immense love to romance our hearts back to Him when we forget Him, lose our way, or our hearts become hardened for whatever reason.

I was intrigued by Emily’s interest in fixing cars, and how she related to a world with which I am slightly familiar. That is what originally drew me to read this book. I am a girl who is not afraid of grease, but I certainly do not have the extent of knowledge that Emily does of cars, fixing them, and such. I wish I did, but it does not come as easily to me as it seems it is for her in the story. Being that my dad is also a car mechanic, I recalled terms and processes that my dad used to accomplish his task at hand. Memories flooded me as I stood, as a child, observing, listening, smelling, passing tools to my dad as he had need of them. There are certain scents and sounds of the garage that are endearing to me because of that time. Then as a young adult, I even got pretty good at determining if a car was idling well or not. I even test drove them for my dad to see if certain sounds indicated that something was wrong with the transmission or something else. Haha!! So, as I read this book, memories flooded forward, reminding me of days long gone. Reading this made me miss my daddy, who lives far from me.

While this book is meant for teens, I enjoyed it. Not all adults are interested in juvenile literature, but I am. I find it is good to keep in touch with the “youth” side of life and the challenges that come with it. My own kids are growing up and will soon be teenagers themselves, and I want to foster as much patience, understanding, and unconditional love as I can. I know that I will need them to pass through that time period with grace. The basic points of this book are applicable to all ages: Open your heart to God. He knows where and who you are, your hurts and challenges; and, no matter what, He passionately loves you. Trust Him and find peace, even in the hardest times in your life.

I would recommend this book to any female teen in my life.

Book Review for: The Brave Young Knight by Karen Kingsbury...

This is a book review for The Brave Young Knight written by Karen Kingsbury and illustrated by Gabrielle Grimard. (Release Date: April 2011)

In the last few months I have felt impressed of the Lord to give a call to my four little knights, especially, to be young men of honor and integrity. They are not easy concepts to grasp when you are 10, 8, 6, and 3, but this book has been an effective addition to my campaign for their souls.

I am overjoyed to be able to share this book with you. Before I begin I would like to make an observation how the dedications at the beginning of the story express such joy and celebration of the blessing of children. That warms my heart!

This is a story about a young knight who is kind, helpful, smart, fast, and strong. He is always available to one in need and thoughtful towards all. This young knight lives in the West Village, one of four villages that make up the kingdom.

The king of the land is looking for a prince and calls one man from each village to compete for this honor. Whoever can prove to be the bravest will receive the crown.

Before the competition, the young knight’s father reminds him, in spite of his insecurities, “My son, the bravest knight is not always the fastest. Follow God and he will help you run the race… My son, the bravest knight is not always the strongest. Faith in God will give you the strength you need… My son, the bravest knight is not always the smartest. Ask God and he will give you great wisdom.”

The competition begins with, what seems to be, failure, but it ends with a fantastic lesson on the value of integrity, honesty, honor, and a reminder how God “rewards those who diligently seek Him.” It also speaks of persevering through trials; honesty when it would be easier to be dishonest; the importance of dedicating choices to God so He can help us follow the correct paths and do what is right; and, overall, it is about having faith, communication, and trust in God so that He can “help you run the race”, “give you the strength you need”, and “give you great wisdom.”

The story is remarkable in content, easy to follow, and makes its way straight to the heart. The illustrations are warm, attractive, and a perfect compliment to the story. It is a simple and valuable tool that can aid a parent or loving adult to explain the value God puts on a heart surrendered to Him, and the importance of Godly morals throughout life and challenges.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a little boy. While this book is stated to be for boys between the ages of 4 and 7, I would personally extend the age to even 9. The message is clear and is certainly applicable for all ages; not to mention that it is presented beautifully.

This is a book review for the new and brilliant series called The Princess Parables, in particular Princess Grace and the Little Lost Kitten. This series is written by Jeanna Young and Jacqueline Johnson and illustrated by Omar Aranda. (Release Date: February 2011)

Princess Grace lives in a grand and marvellous castle with her father, the king, and her four sisters- Joy, Faith, Charity, and Hope.

Princess Grace has found five cute, cuddly kittens and dubs the boldest of them, Poppy. They are a handful to take care of, but she is determined to do a good job.

One day, Princess Grace and her sisters become concerned when Poppy goes missing and is nowhere to be found. They go in search of the lost kitten, continuing through each challenge that comes their way until Poppy is found in an unexpected place. Upon returning home, the hearts of each family member are full of rejoicing and gratitude.

This particular story is based on Matthew 18:12-14 which speaks of God’s immense love for His lost children and how He goes after them to offer love, protection, and help, even after making bad decisions or getting into trouble. He desires to bring the “lost into His safety and care”.

I must say that I am very impressed with the illustrations by Omar Aranda. They are vibrant and leap off the page. They could easily be a delightful, animated series for television and dvd. The jacket cover was a hit with ALL of my children, but especially my first three of whom are boys and my fourth being a girl, all between the ages of 10 and 5. They were each highly impressed by the glittery touches and fun illustrations.

I felt that there were mini lessons throughout the story such as the following: showing concern and care for others; working together; taking care of responsibility; honouring your word; utilizing brainstorming and the process of elimination to accomplish something; not giving up in the face of challenge but persevering to the end; and the reminder that prayer helps us to keep going forward in focusing on God. He can give strength and help us to do right even in trouble.

I like how the story ends with a thought by Princess Joy explaining what her name means and what she has learned from her experience. I also like how it gives a simple and direct explanation of the parable as mentioned in the Bible.

I would recommend this book to one who knows a little lady who enjoys “adventure… drama… and keeping busy”. Nearly any little girl will find Princess Grace and Poppy enchanting and endearing. This book is a great way to instill God’s truths into a young feminine heart. My daughter loves it.

January 17, 2011... A Thank You To Our Pediatrician...

Title: Thank You!!

We have lived here in Italy for nearly a complete 7 and a half years now. These years have been full of lots of things, one of which is sickness. My kids have had a good long run of illness and medications, some serious, some run-of-the-mill, and some odd. All in all, I MUST say a tremendous "Thank You" to the dearest pediatrician in our lives, Dr. N.

You have been a blessing to us in so many ways. Your kindness, gentleness, professionalism, and care stand out above so many, and I am honored to be blessed with you in our lives.

Your care has extended out to us in ways you were not obligated to show it, and yet, in spite of your busy schedule and high demand for your services, you have made time for me and my family. I cannot thank you enough.

Here is a little "thank you" from my heart. The five leafy plants represent my five growing children. The pink flower (it is a deeper pink in person) represents me, and the blue represents my husband. It is a simple cut, but I like it just for that...

(So you all know... I am going through an artistic slump, and, frankly, I needed a simple project to allow myself to feel okay that I accomplished something, but have not been able to get myself to accomplish very much. I am working on it.)
Anyhow... this simple cut may not be much to look at, but I assure you that it is part of my heart, and actually signifies big things.

I created this cut for my niece, Sefora's, 11th birthday. I know that she is entering a critical time of her life, adolescence. While I know that this time period is full of many challenge, I desired to give her a visual reminder that God is always with her, to listen to His voice, and rest in His promises. I believe the idea came across well. My only regret... need to work on cutting letters. They seem a bit choppy. sigh... I still like it, though.

Book Review for: Mr. Shipley's Governess by Joanne Troppello...

Mr. Shipley’s Governess by Joanne Troppello

Sophie Baird is an elementary school teacher faced with the challenge of moving on through life while dealing with the fresh wounds of tragedy. Deciding that she needs a change, Sophie takes a position as tutor for the Shipley family: comprised of the young widower, Sebastian Shipley, and his sickly nine-year-old daughter, Anastasia.

This story recounts Sophie’s journey back to hope, faith, and healing; as she finds that she is able, once again, to trust and to love. As the story progresses, it seems that the heart changes are occurring in others of the Shipley household as well. These changes reveal a budding love between Sophie and Mr. Shipley, and complete devotion between Sophie and Anastasia.

The first thing I noticed about the “feel” of this book is that I became very emotionally involved with the characters. They are real-to-life. It was interesting to see that I had difficulty remembering that the story is contemporary. For some reason my mind related to the story as an historical novel, and I was startled several times in the midst of reading by a phrase or exclamation that encouraged me to return, and reassured me of it being, present day. It was an intriguing sort of occurrence.

I was blessed by two incidences of miraculous intervention: once with Sophie, who was battling with doubt, fear and mistrust of God. She received confirmation of God’s passionate love for her from a very surprising and unlikely source. I related to this and was overwhelmed to tears of gratitude and amazement. (God is so good.) The other had to do with Anastasia, her faith in a good God, and God’s ability to speak to the heart of a child.

Other elements that I enjoyed were the references to Jane Austen, C. S. Lewis, and the sites around Belfast, Ireland. The details still ring longing in my heart to see what she saw in her travels.

This book can certainly be labelled a “Christian Romance Novel”. It is easy to read and flows nicely. It is not weighty nor overly long–drawn-out. I believe is perfect for busy moms or overly stressed persons who long to read something sweet and something that includes many encouraging reminders, but who do not want to add any more stress to the day. I enjoyed it, and I am actually considering reading it again even though I have just completed the first run-through.

I would recommend this book to other moms or women who miss reading more often, but haven’t a lot of time, or who have become accustomed to light reading based on too much distraction in life and/or a busy and intense lifestyle. It is light reading but thoroughly enjoyable.

As it is an e-book, it was a bit more challenging for me to get to through while maintaining the needs of my home and family. That may not be problem for all, though. I would have preferred having a paperback in hand, but the story was enjoyable enough to help me forgive that point and make time in the evenings to complete it.

My baby girl has turned 5! The time is flying by, and I am so grateful for God's blessings to me and my family. While there are certainly challenges in our days, I want to make the most of the happy times. I am one who plans the themes of birthdays well in advance. I did animals this past year of 2010, and found that the panda seemed like the perfect theme for my daughter, along with the rainbow, as we love rainbows. :-) My daughter is a vibrant, smiley, twirling, jumping, and loving-to-be-tickled little girl. She loves colors bright and beautiful, and princesses and pretty things, too. So, what better cut than this for my dear baby girl.

I love you, Miranda... More than words can say. I sit here remembering the day I saw your form on the monitor and realized you were a girl... I remember clearly the day you were born, and I got to see you for the first time. I remember, and just feel so blessed. God surprised me with a special gift on that December day in 2005. After 3 brothers, God had given me complete peace about the possiblity, even probability, of having another boy. I was content knowing that God has plans for this family, and He would, and will, give us all we need to teach us, grow us, and help us. I longed for a girl for many years, someone who I could have just a touch more in common with because of sharing the same gender- girl. I longed, and God did not provide (at least not for a long time). When I surrendered that to Him, He knocked my socks off with a HUGE surprise- YOU!!! You are BRRRRRRUTIFUL (!), and Mamma, Papà, and your brothers (all four of them) just think you are the greatest.

Baby girl, always remember to 1)tell the truth, 2)work hard, 3) do what's right for Jesus, 4) do your best. Remember "God leads me..." Psalm 23, verse 2.

"Guard your heart for it is the wellspring of life." Proverbs 4:23

Keep being the unique, happy, and vibrant YOU God created you to be. Remember... He has a purpose and plan for making you as you are. So... Trust Him to help you, guide you, grow you, and most of all LOVE you in a most perfect way, just for you.

He is the Best Friend you can EVER have!

December 16, 2010... Gabriele, God's Little Warrior!...

God ministered to him even during those most difficult days. God loves him, and will be near in any coming challenges that are to come. Thanks, Lord.)

One hope is that when one has a brand new baby, life will be all sweet and cuddly and comfortable, but we all know it is not always that way. Gabriele is one of those babies who has suffered alot in the two months since his birth. I was unable to meet him before, but recently went to see him. Here is his "Birth-day" and "Get Well" card.

Dear Gabriele, God's Little Warrior,

We are so happy to have you in our lives. Even though you are small, you are a great blessing. Your life speaks of God's faithfulness.

Psalm 91:1-6 says, "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust." Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday."

In t hese few months you have passed through many challenges, but we know that God has had His hand on you. Hallelujah! We thank God for how He has worked and is working in your little life and in the life of your family.

Knowing this, we can have faith that He will continue to keep you for the rest of your life.

It is information that is more than useful, it is essential.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths."

Stay on the path leading to Jesus. The most important decision you can make in your life is to choose Jesus as your Friend and Saviour. He is the most important Person, Place, or Thing in this whole world. Trust in, cling to, rely on, and believe in Him, for He cares for you.

Romans 8:31, 35, 37-39 says, " 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?...35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?...37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

We love you very much, Gabriele. Your family is very special to us, and so are you. May God "bless you, keep you, make His face shine upon you, be gracious to you, and give you His peace." Numbers &:24-26

Book Review: Voices of the Faithful - Book 2 ...

This book, Voices of the Faithful- Book 2 (by By Beth Moore, Kim P. Davis, International Mission Board), is a year’s worth of devotional chats by evangelical believers around the world doing their best to serve the nations God has put on their heart to reach in the name of Jesus. Each is a glimpse into the lives and experiences of some of the missionaries or those called to minister to other nations.
While I knew that I would be blessed by these readings, I did not realize to what extent. I have had a heart for missions since I was a child growing up in a small church. There were always special speakers and presentations showing us what others are doing to reach hearts for Christ. While I have never truly felt the call to GO into the mission field, I have been led to live in a foreign country. I have seen some of the challenges of living in a nation that is wrapped up in bondage. I have come to acknowledge that, while I have not been called here as a “missionary”, this is still my mission field. I have come to take to heart these verses from Colossians 3:17 and 23, “And whatever you do in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him… And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” I am aiming to use my normal, ordinary, sometimes monotonous and challenging life, to encourage and bless others with the talents that I have. It may seem simple, but God uses the simple things to confound the wise, and He can grow great fruit from even the smallest of seeds. That is what I am seeing in the pages of this book. These fellow workers are doing the same, although to a grander scale and with a deeper purpose.
These daily readings are a challenge to read one at a time as they are short, but stock full of moments I crave… they are like having a chat over some coffee with a friend: sharing testimonies of God’s hand working in challenging situations; lessons on faith and trust; explaining some neat ideas used to try to reach more souls, and just encouraging another to listen to God’s voice, follow where He leads, dream big dreams, and KNOW a living and loving Lord. So many of the verses chosen are ones I have already underlined in my Bible, but some I have just NEEDED to hear again for this time or have not fully become aware of yet. They have been nuggets of blessing to my heart.
As we have entered this new year, 2011, I have been asking the Lord for a clear vision of what He has for me, and surprisingly, He is using this book to stir some things that are not clear, but are sure and being made ready. I am blessed beyond words for the unity I feel with these brothers and sisters in this big, and yet small, world. I am blessed to know that the Lord binds us together in unity THROUGH PRAYER, even while we are separated by oceans, miles and miles of land and mountains, by different languages and cultures and traditions… None of that can separate us from each other, in a way, because none of that can separate us from Jesus, who is the common bond. Nothing can separate us from Him, and while we are drawn to the tangible and visual, His Spirit links us in a heavenly bond that reaches across all spaces and challenges and differences.
I had an incident occur while reading one of the daily devotions. I was deeply touched by the words spoken by one of the missionaries, R.C.H (American Peoples), and became overwhelmed to tears. I put down the book for a time, and had to go off and find something I needed for a birthday party for one of my kids. As I browsed through some boxes I came across one of my old journals and thought I would read through it and remember… Wouldn’t you know, the very words that the missionary used and that spurred him to action, were so similar to a “calling” that I received many years ago but had forgotten. It is time to remember and act, and this book has been used in various ways to encourage me to do so.
“And He has made from ONE BLOOD every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’ ” Acts 17:26-28
Those of us whom have chosen to follow Christ as our living Saviour and Lord, we are a family, a body. We each have a part to play, and sometimes, many times, another part of our body needs us. Prayer is the work! As Pat said in the book, “There is victory in prayer!” While this book is encouraging and spurring, more than anything, I join with these loved ones asking for corporate prayer from each part of this spiritual body. For… Amazing things are accomplished through prayer. Many times, God asks us to CRY OUT to Him, and HE does the work. Are you and I doing our part in interceding on behalf of our own body? I am doing some, but… I need to do more.
Beth Moore wrote an introduction that alone is inspiring, and I would like to quote some of her words to you. I believe she has nailed a predicament precisely when she says, “I see an epidemic of boredom in the body of Christ. I am convinced that one issue is primarily to blame: we are protecting ourselves right out of our callings. Right out of our God-ordained destinies. We are comfort addicts… and we keep wondering why we never feel satisfied… to miss our callings out of fear is never to have lived at all.”
“When hard times come, the key word isn’t survival. It’s revival.”
While we may not all be called to “GO” to another country to share the Lord with others, where we are is our individual mission field. What are YOU doing to reach where YOU are? And, remember, even though you may not be called to go, Beth stated this, and I believe it is so true… “your prayers matter immensely. The fact is, they matter immeasurably.” Prayer is the WORK!!!
To conclude, I have a request, please pray for Italy. This is what you may not know about this country. It is known as the "missionary graveyard" because most missionaries who come here do not last more than two years. In general, only 10% of missionaries return to Italy after their first term. Many years ago a reformation swept over Europe but never touched Italy, and we are in desperate need of the Lord’s work here in this nation. Less than 1% of the population is involved with an Evangelical Christian Church. And, even if all of the Charismatic Christian groups were added to that number, it would still only be 5% of the population. Almost all Italians call themselves Catholic "Christians", but less than 10% practice their faith. While this is frustrating, what is even more frustrating is that for as small as the Evangelical Church is here in Italy, there has been great division from church to church throughout its history. Please pray with us that God would deliver the oppressed; encourage those of us living here; purify and strengthen His church with passion for the lost and for the Living Word; and bless this nation with refreshing and changing revival. Thank you.
James 5:16b says, “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

There is nothing negative that I have to say about the book except this, a lot of different fonts are used in the print. It gets a little distracting. I enjoyed the prayers at the end of each devotional, and I thought it was a great idea to have an Index listing “Devotion Titles By Month” and then another listing “Scriptural References”. I also liked how there is a section at the end that specifically lets the reader know HOW he can receive Christ as his Saviour, and another section letting him know how he can pray for “International Missionaries and People Groups” across the world.
That is what I have to share about this book and its affect on me and my life. While my review is long, I hope you will read it and be blessed. May you also be encouraged to read the book and be inspired, ministered to, and encouraged to minister to others. Blessings…

Remembering The Days of 2010...

New Christmas Cut... Titled: "The Free Gift" (created December 12, 2010)

“I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10b

Life is so full to the point that every December of every year, we are surprised that the end of another year has arrived so quickly.

“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12

At the beginning of this year, I felt a word stand out to me, a word that would somehow sum up this year and things that God would be working or tuning in me. My word for this year was: STEWARDSHIP. I felt it was necessary to focus on this word in my marriage, my family, my home, my relationships, my responsibilities, and my waitings. Here are some of the things I learned or relearned:

*Make the most of every opportunity.

Speak words of blessing. Don’t underestimate the very simplest acts- a smile, a phone call to say you care, a note of gratitude… Even the smallest acts can grow big fruit in the hands of God. You never know how you can cause change to occur just by making the most of an everyday situation, being a cheerful giver, being patient, etc… While waiting for our house to make steps towards completion, I have stewed and stormed in impatience. I go through waves of peace to storms of restlessness. There was a certain point when I was impressed that the kids needed to have good memories of even this, so I had a small dedication moment with each of them. Each was given a pillar to paint. Their initial was creatively decorated, and I explained the reasons behind it. Such a simple, fun, and creative time was all to remind them to “Stay in the light of the Son.” He takes our monotonous, day-to-day moments, and brings light and inspiration to them. He takes our less than satisfactory efforts and blossoms them. The kids often recall that activity and remember the message behind it. A seed-planting moment that I pray God will flourish and grow into thoughts and feelings of love for His Word.

*Be a “finisher”.

Keep your promises as soon as possible. I have done it many times. One of my kids will come up to me asking me something, and I push them away with a “yeah, sure, later.” That “later” has stretched out for days, and sometimes never has come to pass. That leaves a lasting impression on my kids, and I do not want them to EVER think that God is that way because of my example. I must keep my promises and put them as a main priority. Even their little desires and needs are to be met with care, love, and consideration. (still working on this) And persevere until the end. Our lives are journeys, not just steps from one goal to the next. Sometimes, there are long waiting times, stumbling blocks, and steep mountains to climb, but I must keep going. Even if I have to trudge, crawl, hop, jump, climb, or tiptoe along the way.

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6

*Simplify.

I began to see how being overly busy was damaging communion in our home. The kids were crying out for attention, and so I made a point to eliminate some things that were “good” but not “best” for our family. I even made a point to keep the kids home from summer camp and just let them experience lazy days of playing, learning, and boredom. They learned so much because they were not overly stimulated. They had amazing creative play. And they will remember learning about the bees, butterflies, praying mantises, and other creatures that we examined and researched. We read together and laughed together. We had fun, and we made some amazing memories. There is a reason why God’s word says, “Be still and know that I am God.” Relax and enjoy the simple blessings; and by simplifying life, give yourself more time to truly spend with Jesus and spiritual seed planting and growing in family and relationships.

*Take responsibility for my own words and actions.

“Don’t blame the man.” It was a quote in the movie Second Chance, with Michael W. Smith in it. It was a quote that made a mark in my mind. How much time do I spend blaming someone else, complaining that it was someone else’s fault, etc? I have seen that I and my kids have been making a bad habit of blaming someone else for our failings, our mistakes, our lack of responsibility, and laziness. Excuses only leave room for negativity, back talk, and disobedience.

*Let go of my dreams so God can replace them with bigger and better ones.

I guess every girl spends a good part of her childhood dreaming: about marriage, having children, her possible career, and on and on… God asked me to surrender my dreams to Him. And, I responded like a raccoon, hoarding his treasure in his hand while the precious possession is stuck in a jar. Yup, I was like my stubborn, then, two year old who insisted it was “MINE”. Jesus had to coax my insecure and scared hands open and reveal that there is REST in trusting Him with my dreams, my failures, my heart, my future… I was reminded of Joseph. He had dreams, which were all dashed when his brothers sold him into slavery, when he was taken from all he had every known. He was taken to Egypt and could have easily just given into despair. God took his old dreams and replaced them with joy, peace, talent, favour, blessing, and new and marvellous dreams. He was abundantly blessed and used in a grand way because God had a plan for his life. Since He is the “same yesterday, today, and forever” we can rest assured that He also has a plan for our lives. When we surrender and trust, He can work His perfect will. It hurt to let go of my old dreams, some I had since childhood, but… I am so blessed by the relief I have found in being able to let go and trust Him.

*The true significance of forgiveness DOES also include Forgetting.

Forget the pain, bitterness, and resentment of the offensive act, as they will only eat away at my soul and add weight and burden to my heart. Fight to forget. But… remember to learn from the experience, and, so, grow better. Just be cautious, those old feelings WILL try to grow back again. Keep fighting them off, and be at peace knowing that God is my DEFENDER, my Shield, my Advocate.

*Stand in the gap.

“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:20

This was a particularly special lesson to me. I was blessed to experience this revelation while praying for some immediate family members, a brother in Liberia, and some other spiritual siblings in China. I believe this verse can also be 2 or 3 gathered for a common CAUSE not just for those in the same location. I am not able to be near my family in body, but, when we join together in prayer for a common need, Jesus is the common bond between us and He truly does BIND US together by His Spirit, even if there is half a world between us. I have seen it, and I have experienced the wonder of this. I have seen prayers answered this way.

*Praise hard, Pray harder.

Prayer IS the work! I have experienced Joy and peace that make no sense in hard times, and it is only because of Jesus. I have laughed in moments where I should cry for pain. I have cried with joy over moments where grief should be strong and silencing. I have also been learning that praying for my enemies, or those who have hurt me, really does make a difference. There is victory through prayer. Don’t stress! Take it to Jesus in prayer, and know that He cares.

“The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” James 5:16b

This can be further explained in a quote which has recently become my favourite. “There can be no healing without thanksgiving.” (Martin Rinkart) I know this FIRST HAND- especially in my burn/healing challenge. There is healing in the presence of Jesus. The Lord “lives in the praise of His people.” (Psalm 22:3) Where the Lord dwells is healing, restoration, refreshing, renewal, and all we need.

I took some time to really focus on the events of this year, the joys and challenges. Here are some of the challenges that took place since January: mid January to mid February was the chicken pox epidemic that arrived full force; April began my journey into driving in Italy (what stress!); May was the scarlet fever outbreak; July was Dario’s lime-in-the-eye accident; September was the diagnosis that I suffer from stress induced headaches (ugh!); and November was the 1 year anniversary of Nonna Nunziata’s death, the 10th anniversary of my Abuela Lydia’s death, and others too. Not to mention, early November’s battle with lice and the end of November’s burn accident (me)- see HERE for more on that.

Those are some of the major things that have weighed in our hearts. That does not include waiting for our home addition to be complete, challenges of the heart with certain family members, and innumerable other things.

But, now, let me publicly count my blessings: getting back into touch with old friends and family and getting to know newer ones on Facebook; getting a papercut published; getting my driver’s permit in May; the boys’ June guitar recitals in which they did beautifully (so proud of them); the great summer of learning and growing together; visits from Zios, Zias, surprise cousins, and Grandma and Grandpa; Passing my driver’s written test and getting our shutters installed in September; Passing my driver’s practical test and getting my license in October; our windows and doors being installed in November; and celebrating these days that God has made. He has filled them with rainbows, beautiful sunsets, laughter, all kinds of fascinating details, and so much love.

If nothing else you read in this newsletter touches your heart, I hope this will. Jesus is sufficient for ALL of your, and my, needs!!! His birth, His life, His death- all speak of His extreme, extravagant, and marvellous love for us. He is “Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

He is waiting with open arms for YOU. “Draw near to God and
He will draw near to you.” James 4:8
We must not wait, for time is short. We must live each day as if it is our last,
before it really IS our last. Let’s live with purpose.

May God “bless you, keep you, make His face shine upon you, be gracious to you, and give you His peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)

November 20, 2010... Rescue Me... Based on Psalm 144:7...

Titled “Rescue Me based on Psalm 144:7” which says, “Stretch out Your hand from above; Rescue me and deliver me out of great waters…”

Not too long ago, after a few days of intense trial and challenge, I was feeling just DONE. I lay on the sofa and willed myself into a dark and not supremely restful nap. But before I dozed off, I had a vision in my head of THIS. My trials were swirling me and threatening to overwhelm and overpower me, and my soul was crying out for His hand to rescue me. When I made this I had not found the verse yet. When I did, it fit JUST PERFECTLY. I hope it blesses you as it has me. He is there, always there, never leaving or forsaking. Trust Him to hear you, see you, know you. And, may you sense His presence even in the darkest moments. When you feel the most DONE may you see His hand work and move in the most remarkable ways. He is able, nothing is impossible with Him. He cares, lean on Him.

My fourth son, and last of five children, just celebrated his third birthday. I was very excited while planning his party because I knew JUST what the theme would be. I chose "Curious George And Other Monkeys, Too", but it may as well read "Curious D--- And Other Monkeys, Too" because he is such a fan of George and is such a little monkey himself. :-)

Book Review for: Then Sings My Soul by Robert J. Morgan...

Then Sings My Soul by Robert J. Morgan has been such a blessing to me. I spent many childhood years in a church that mainly sang hymns. At the time, I resented them, thinking them old and out-dated for the most part. As I have gotten older, moved overseas, and experienced various different challenges in my own life, I have been amazed as I have often recalled the words to one or another hymn in some of the hardest times of my life. I have come to truly appreciate and yearn for the old songs, especially now that I live in another culture where they are not even sung in my language and some of been drastically changed in translation.

When I saw that this book was available to review on Booksneeze, I was very excited. I love to learn about the backgrounds of songs, hymns or not. This book has "150 Christmas, Easter, and All-time favorite Hymn Stories". I was thoroughly excited to see the music for the hymns on each left hand side page and the explanation of each hymn on the right. What a brilliant and organized idea! It even has different ways to search a particular song: "By Hymn Title, First Line, and Songwriter". I like that it is easy to use. Having the music included has helped me to recall several of the hymns that I have not remembered so well. Each of the portions explaining the history of the poetic songs has been a blessing to my heart: a testimony of God's way of weaving history and lives to "bring beauty out of ashes", joy out of sorrow, or strength in weakness and hardship. I have felt a kinship with these brothers and sisters of generations past, and I have wept over their sufferings, joyed in their triumphs; and I have been encouraged by their creativity and perseverance. I have reminisced over some songs and their meaning to MY life, and I have been amazed that one song, or many, can have such significance. I hope to be able to leave a mark on this world as these others have. Some have come to be noticed posthumously, but their works have spoken, possibly, what their lives, at the time, could not. Their words have reached across generations, cultures, time and so many changes, and they STILL touch hearts. That is the awesome inspiration and work of a One, True God. He spans time and uses open hearts, even from the past, to touch hearts in the future. Big and marvelous stuff!

I am so glad I chose this book to review. I look forward to having it our library to read myself, but also to share with my kids. Testimonies of others who have followed God and made a mark on their world, and ours. A testament to what we ourselves can do when we let God have control of our lives and allow Him to take our open hearts and use them for His glory.

The book that I recieved is a "special edition". In an effort to give it an older feel, they left the edges rough. While it is great for effect and character, it makes it harder to turn the pages. That is my only bit of constructive criticism.

This papercut was made for my cousin and friend, Rosemary.

Dear Rosemary,

Here is just a little something for you...a gift of thanksgiving and praise to God for this life He has given you.

"This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24

I created this papercut especially for you and this occasion (her birthday). I came across this verse recently and was really blessed by it (Psalm 31:14). I knew that I had to attempt a papercut expressing God's blessings and provisions in all of our "times".

The hand in this papercut represent God's carrying/covering/cradling hand. The sphere is supposed to have a clock "feel" to it, and it especially represents some "times" that I have witnessed God's hand move, work, grow, bless, and encourage me. He truly has "never left or forsaken me". :-) These "times" have been some of the hardest and traumatic times in my life, but God has grown good things in me as I have surrendered, clung to, relied on, and believed in Him. His mercy has endured through each "STORMY", "DARK", "DESERT", and "BLESSED AND BEAUTIFUL" time. No matter what, He has been faithful, good, and never unjust.

May your heart be overwhelmed with joy as you remember His help and the works of His hand in your life over these years. In these, it is a blessing to remember. It's a great way "to encourage yourself daily".

I love you dearly, Rosemary. I am so blessed to have you in my life. I am personally grateful for these years, for over these last 11 years, I have had the pleasure of getting to know you, to laugh with you, to share. It has meant so much.

Book Review for: JESUS CALLING 365 devotions for kids...

JESUS CALLING 365 Devotions for Kids is written by Sarah Young.

First, I was extremely excited that it is a hardcover version. Thank you! I opened to the "dedication" page and was touched by the legacy left by a loving mother, who had the wisdom to encourage and the sensitivity to the Lord to be blessed by the lessons her daughter was learning.

I was ministered to as I read the introduction. This phrase especially spoke to my heart, "Let go of your worries and relax in the quiet stillness of My Presence." Various different devotional lessons not only reach out to the heart of the children, but to my heart as the reading mother. That is because it is all based on God's word and the loving messages spoken to an open heart.

I love how the author makes the point of encouraging the readers and listeners to develop a lifestyle of LISTENING to God. When we listen, He will speak. These devotions for every day are very simple, but very direct. Meant to be understandable to children, they are also simple enough for the adult whose mind is just too overwelmed with the trials and challenges of this life. That is where I am at. I NEEDED something simple. I got it, and I am so grateful to the Lord for providing the opportunity to read these excerpts and for helping me to have a heart that wants to hear.

I have been practicing listening to God's voice for years now, but even this "seasoned" believer needed the basic reminders shared in this book. They speak of God's character and His immense, personal, and unconditional love for us. What mother would NOT want that influence for her child? I highly recommend this book for children even 5 and up. Though that young will require some explanation, I still think it's a valuable conversation starter for young ones, too. And depending on your child, even that age can grasp the concepts if backed up. I love the cover art: bright, colorful, and simply sweet. This is easy reading, which helped me to WANT to read it. And, I actually wrote in my journal that I think the title should read: JESUS CALLING 365 devotions for kids (and for adults needing simple childlike reminders for the heart). I also really like that there are "Read On Your Own" sections- extra verses to back up the day's devotion- and the special verse pages between months. Great and encouraging tidbits to remind the soul to "encourage yourself daily".

Two Personal ATC's...

Life...Love...Joy... (Motherhood has been my place of learning, my place of growing, my place for each of these words- along with marriage. It is not often easy, but the rewards are immense. I am especially missing the infant stages now. This is my gentle reminder to myself of days gone by. Oh, how I am missing them, but I am also looking forward to days to come. My kids are growing so quickly. I so want to relax and enjoy them. God is helping me to do that. Ask Him, He can help you, too.)

Romans 8:1, "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (This cut began very differently. I intended that her face was directed heavenward. I had a title chosen already. I decided just to adjust her chin downward to see how it would turn out, and I had a brainstorm of having her kneeling at Jesus' feet with the crosses in the background. I cannot explain to you how I got the idea of having Jesus reaching down to pull her chin up with His gentle fingers, but I can tell you that this is ME. I had a down time and was condemning myself on some things; and this piece of art overwhelmed me to tears. Like a message just for me, which WOULD imply that God used my own hands to create a message for my heart. Yes. Thanks, Lord, it was a special moment. Thank you for reminding me of Your immense and unconditional love. Thank You for touching my heart."

Book Review for: The Boy Who Changed The World by Andy Andrews...

The Boy Who Changed The World by Andy Andrews, reads like a story form of Jeremiah 29:11- “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” It's one story stretched out into individual accounts of four different people whose lives were woven into each other’s. Each speaks of a piece of God’s perfect plan and is interconnected. It's a beautiful and simple expression of how we are born for a reason. I LOVE the story, the creative layout, and the illustrations, done by Philip Hurst. Perfectly done. The art is gently colourful, detailed, and sweet. Each painting brings out the story into a wonderful tapestry, a visual expression of God’s goodness, blessing, and character.

I highly recommend this story to ALL age groups. Simple as it is, it spoke to my heart. As one of the characters , Mrs. McLoyd, said, “…little things can make a big difference. Everything we do matters. Every action you take, even small things, can change the world.” Sometimes we feel lost in the world; like our lives are nothing in the whole scheme of things, but if we look back we can see how simple people were used in amazing ways because God was orchestrating. He sees the bigger plan. Joseph in the Bible is a perfect example of this. He said, “What you have meant for evil, God intended for good.” We must trust and surrender and listen to the voice of Jesus. We must cling to Him in hope, believe that “He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” We must be good stewards of each moment given to us, each life that passes our way, and each opportunity we have to speak hope, joy, and encouragement into another. We cannot possibly know what can come of it, but God knows.

My Third Son's First Papercut!...

Spike The Hedgehog...

Yesterday was a fun day. My third son, oddly enough, has bronchitis right now. In an effort to distract him from his sadness at not being able to go outside and play, I helped him do his first papercut. So, here it is! I love it!!

Oh, there is a story behind it. My mother-in-law could not sleep the other night, and our dogs were making an awful ruckus outside. She went to see what they were up to and discovered that they had gotten out and were running around everywhere. When she was preparing to return inside, her foot hit something spherical. Wondering she prodded at it with her foot and was confused about this "ball" at her feet. Then she realized... it was a rolled up hedgehog!!! So she grabbed a bucket and prodded it inside. Yesterday morning she told us about it. We had a live animal study, though a short one. He sure was cute. We observed his quills, his cute face, his defensive reactions (curling up in a ball and his unraveling), etc... and then I let him out into our garden. He sure did have a rather interesting smell- not necessarily a good one. :-) Did you know he will eat "insects, worms, centipedes, snails, mice, frogs, and snakes. As a hedgehog picks its way through the hedges it emits piglike grunts—thus, the hedgehog." Woohoo! My mother-in-law was perfectly willing to have him as a garden helper. ;-)

When I returned after letting him go, Luca, my third wanted to know more about him. When it was time to choose a topic, "Spike" won out over all other possible topics from which to create art. We named him "Spike", and we are hoping we can see him again sometime.

Book Review for Anne Bradstreet by D.B. Kellogg

In an age where a woman was expected to be only a “good Christian, wife, and mother”, I was inspired by how Anne Bradstreet nurtured her family, blessed her husband, and cultivated her interest in sharing her faith, struggles, and life through poetry. She was a remarkable woman of great faith who relied on God in all of the challenges and circumstances of her life. Her poetry encouraged, blessed, and brought joy to others. This book expresses the events within Anne’s and other’s lives, and the parallel of those who do or don’t walk where God leads. It is clear how circumstances caused tremendous spiritual growth in Anne’s life as she surrendered to God’s will.

I related to many of her thoughts, desires, and doubts. Her imagery and thought processes were refreshing and enlightening. I was prodded to desire more spiritual growth, and I enjoyed the informative educational views of medicine, travel, and various other aspects of life at that time.

The detailed historical events frame Anne’s life in very poignant ways. They clarify life in the 1600’s. Each page is full of information, history, and details of Puritan life and known figures of the day. It’s amazing how things were then versus how life is now in 2010.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the roles of amazing women in history.

This cut was based on a silly observance. My dog is a timid creature, cautious and selective in his companionship. We got him after he had been mistreated by someone else, and even though he was a small puppy when we got him, he never fully behaved as a puppy does. My brother-in-law found him and brought him to us. I tended to him the best he would let me, and he has improved so much. He is in his "teens" now, but recently had a puppy moment. He noticed a grasshopper trying vainly to escape notice just near his feet. He put his face near it, and when it got startled and hopped a bit out of the way, he got excited. It was like a call to "come out and play". He placed his front paws under his chin while leaving his hind legs in normal standing position, and mini hopped around it, as if answering the call to hop with joy, thought that was not the intention of the grasshopper. He nosed it, and when it jumped again, he excitedly hopped around, until the grasshopper got the best of him and escaped. It made such an impression on my mind. This traumatized dog has made tremendous headway. He has learned to enjoy simple things as a simple dog should, without fearing the little things like he used to. Big deal!

May God Guard Your Growing Love... (this gift measures 8 1/2 high by 11 inches wide)

We have a wedding to go to this weekend for one of my husband's cousins. I have been brainstorming a wedding cut for a little while now, and this is what I came up with. I have never done one quite like this before: my own design of a profiled elegant couple. I am pleased with it, though still getting used to its finished look. I also did the card above it for my mother-in-law to give from herself.

It is a worthy thing to pray that God guards and protects a growing love as there are many things that we know can destroy this sacred union. I am reminded of a verse in Proverbs, chapter 4, verse 23 which says, "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life." Whatever challenges one may come across our ways in life, may they only draw us closer together and strengthen our resolve to fight for our mates and the love God intended between a husband and wife!

Longing... (My favorite one so far... I took an image I found of an advertisement of a poster for Madame Butterfly, cut out the lady and part of the surrounding house framework. I then built a papercut around her form. Originally she was looking out on a wooded spot to where a bird was in a nest. I cut that out and formed the image you see. I am really happy with it.)

Here are some crafts that I did for the party.

The theme was the combination of two children's books: Fancy Nancy and Gigi: God's Little Princess. All I can say is that this party was great fun! The joy was in the details. Like what? Sprinkles over bananas and apples to make them look fancy and bright. Butterfly wings created from sparkly material rubber banded or pinned on clothing with pipe cleaner handles created to attach them to little hands (So forming the wings). Tiara and shield crafts. Tissue paper corsages, and netted flowers to wrap in the hair. There were even heart shaped balloons and rainbow colored yarn to string to them. And, of course there was lots of play time in the park where the party was held.

These things are still being used even these days after the party. They are enjoying them so. Simple, but effective for stimulating the imagination and making pretty little girls feel like they are going to a ball. Yay!

Creative Crafty Time: Collaging with cloth and anything else and other stuff, too.

This is the design down the front of the skirt dress. I took green pipe cleaners and formed a vine. I filled in with leaves from an old bouquet of blue roses that someone gave me when Luca was born. I took some old paper roses and water colored them in pink and purple. I then took a butterfly from an old shirt and watercolored it yellow. I then glued on the wings of a discarded and broken butterfly that normally is in flower arrangements. I love it!

I hung ribbons off the shoulder, and to decorate the front I took an already formed ribbon bow for presents and glued on a large button I have saved for a while.

Apron made from discarded purple umbrella, an old sash I have held onto for years, and lots of ribbon. The wide pink ribbons were from when Miranda was born. Seemed fitting to use them for this special purpose. I love to wear this apron myself. I used it to brighten up the dark of the dress itself. The dark dress was an old skirt someone had passed onto me. It had a bleach mark and was put into my craft box. I knew it would come to good use! The apron covered the bleach spot so nicely, too. :-)

Center purple flower and the two green leaves are made from rolled pipe cleaners. The gold edges are cardboard covered with gold present ribbon. All were hot glued in place.

Copper tiara, worked and wound around itself into the form of a tiara.

Tophat created by using cardboard circle with center cut out, glued to black posterboard on both sides. Center cut out again. Rolled long length of black posterboard to create tall part and stapled. Bottom edge was wripped about every inch and a half and stapled and glued down to hold to rim. Feathers added for detail. The top is open.

Sword made from a piece of wood from an old shutter. Wrapped in aluminum foil, then taped down with clear tape. Handle was also taped to prevent any possibility of splinters. Name of child was written on paper then placed on handle before taping.

Miranda in her homemade princess dress... Good thing she is the only girl. I could not see doing that for four girls. hahahah.... Took me a day and a half to complete all of the crafty things for the party. I loved it, but it was a long process. Thank you to my family for their support of my crazy creative splurges. :-)

Both approached the project very differently, but I think that they did wonderfully for their first trys. They would both like to do more. It was an interesting experience: educational, bonding, and fun. Nice!!

There is a Zia who lives just down the street that needs a bit of encouragement. She is failing in health, and needs a touch from Jesus. So... I decided at least to share some visual love with her. July 2010...Two Special Cuts...

We had a double (okay triple) themed birthday party. We held it on July 4th, so of course come colors were from that. You know, Red, white, and blue, stars and stripes... The first two original themes were as follows: King Josiah in the Bible became king at 8 years old, and He was a king who loved God. And... to go along with my year-long animal themes, I decided to use an animal that was known for being king, but was not a lion. Any guesses who the animal part of the theme was based on? If you guessed BABAR then you are correct. I loved the choices, and so did my son. Different is one of the things I like. Originality mixed with the usual. By the way, there are no birthday parties that I could find online based on this character. Odd, I think. Anyhow, it was a simple, but fun, party. Lots of food, laughter, and fellowship. (Titled "Babar And The Red Balloon")

Giosaia, we love you so much. We are so proud of you, and we cannot believe that you are 8 already. Stay in the light of the SON!!!

I was hit with a great wave of desire to do some trades. There is a song that I remember from childhood called "Abiding Love". While I was creating this papercut, I kept thinking of that song, but inserting "A-budding" in place of "Abiding". So... I suppose it is a pun of sorts. :-)

I have been thinking about youth, love, and that time of growth. I am watching young adults around me pass through what I have already passed through. The struggles to know "what is REALLY right or best for my life?" There are those on the way to marriage, or those just starting relationships and in the middle of deep puddles of doubt. There are those beginning new careers, moving away from families, finding new jobs or new homes, preparing for college, ending one chapter of life to begin another.

Change is not easy. And, for me, it seems that my life really does represent the quote, "Anything worth having is worth fighting for." The best things of my life have not come easily by any means. I mean, NOTHING. I was really discouraged about it yesterday, as I scanned through my life and observed how "struggling, stretching, tottering, bending, trudging" have been constants in my journey.

Today I feel better, but I feel heart sore. I know that all of those challenges have caused me to build endurance, grow in faith, and to lean more on God. I am grateful to see how much I have grown, but... Sometimes I wish I could have some things come easily.

Yesterday I was looking at the photostream of some of a friend's art, and I saw that he had a series of three cards representing a flower bud growing. I sat staring, reflecting. One seemed to be ready to soar into the sky, exciting and ready to just be let go to grow. Another seemed as if inching along gradually, up, up, up, but still reaching and wanting. And the last seemed to be going even more slowly, still piled on top of itself and just beginning to show bravery to lean away from what it has always known.

This papercut card, here, represents the couple, the differences in upbringing, location, thought process, and so many other things; but what I really want to be represented is the SUN. It is big and the bud grows towards it because it wants to soak up the light. That is how we each, individually, should ideally be with Jesus, the SON, so that we can soak up His goodness, blessing, and have His direction, guidance, wisdom, discernment, etc... when making life's many tough decisions.

I can attest, personally, to God's faithfulness to guide me and direct me. I prayed often about most issues in my life. I remember feeling at a loss of what to do, many times. I remember feeling overwhelmed, ready to break, stressed out. I remember lots of different emotions, but through them all God was, and is, always in control. As I leaned on Him, and still do lean on Him, as I sought Him for His perfect will in my life, He has always given me an answer- Yes, No, or Wait. As I have obeyed Him, I have seen His perfect will and perfect way. Yes, I have made mistakes, but... He has also helped me to get back up after I have fallen. What a faithful and loving God He is.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

Note: The color of the sun is a little off in the scan. It is more of a light orange... Perhaps other colors are also not exact, but that was the most noticeable.

The Urgency to TRULY LIVE!!!

It was a beautiful day for a hike. Tom and his wife, Anisa, were content to just soak up some sun after an extensive winter. It was a lazy day to recuperate from a long week and the “hustle and bustle” that is oftentimes Life.

For the most part they just walked along the path, well worn by other visitors. Crocuses, daffodils, narcissus, and other brightly coloured beauties were sprouting triumphantly from their damp, earthen beds. Twittering birds sang, flirted, and played around the tree branches above, skipping from one air current to another with glee.

Such joy! It was easy to relax and breathe with such beauty and tranquillity.

Squirrels, wary of these strangers to their home, scampered nervously from their position in a nearby maple tree. They were, seemingly, on a mission to find more nuts. A frenzied mouse sprinted across the path to find shelter in a group of ferns, and in the distant sky, a hawk was gliding and soaring, possibly on its way to find its next prey.

As Tom walked along he was thinking about how content he was. He and his wife both had great jobs. They had raised two beautiful and successful children, who now had families of their own. They were good people who volunteered when they could, donated to various organizations, and leant a helping hand to whoever had need. They were known by all to be kind, generous, and full of integrity. They went to church., and they enjoyed fellowship with others. All in all, they were set.

There was something that plagued his mind, though, even as he sauntered down the muddy trail. Something seemed to nag at his heart, but he was not sure exactly what it was. He thought to share his concern with Anisa, but decided against it, as he really did just want to relax and not let any concerns dampen the serenity.

Anisa was ahead of him by about three meters. Oh, what a woman! She was so beautiful, a true godsend, and as close to a Proverbs 31 woman as any could get. She obviously loved God and sought to always draw closer to Him. Her greatest desires were to seek after, to live for, and to learn more about Him and His ways; and, she had a passion for encouraging others to do the same. She prayed often for her family, friends, and others, and he had never seen anyone who entered into relationships with such passion. Honestly, he did not always understand it. Sometimes he thought it more of a weakness, as it left her vulnerable to so many who might take advantage of her kindness and care. She was too trusting, too loyal, and too interested. But then, he knew that their differences complimented each other.

Tom loved God. He prayed, whenever he thought of it. Perhaps he could do more to encourage growth in his own heart, but he just did not have that urgency. He did what was right, and felt that he was doing a good job at being the best person he could be. He read the Bible occasionally and really did like Pastor John’s ways of sharing God’s Word. He heard people talking about living for God fully surrendered, and, well, he just shrugged his shoulders. “Moderation. Everything in moderation.” That was best. Surely being an extremist and labelled a fanatic was not what Jesus would want them to do. “What Would Jesus Do?”, as far as he was concerned, meant this: living a life of loving and caring and respecting others; not judging; being a good citizen and standing for what was right and moral. Peter, Paul, and the disciples? Extremists, but that was for then, not for now.

A rock tripped him and jolted him out of his deep thoughts… Oh!

He had not realized how deep in thought he was! And now they were approaching the summit of this mountain. They had come here many times before, and he looked forward to soaking up the view that would be before them. It was one of his favourite places to come to and just… be.

Anisa arrived first and stood at the wooden railing intended to keep people from falling over the edge of the cliff. As Tom approached he could see her smiling, and he knew that she was mentally thanking God for His creativity and wonderful imagination. It truly was a sight to behold: the trees blossoming and budding, the earth coming alive in color after spending so many months clothed in deep browns and other blander shades.

A deep sigh escaped from within his heaving chest, and Anisa glanced at him, eyes full of appreciation and joy.

For several minutes they just stayed there, then Anisa decided to sit on a rock off to the side, closer to the trees, leaving Tom in a clearing closer to the railing. As they both meditated in silence, Tom was startled by a movement under his feet. What? In the moment that he was ready to step back, he saw the railing sink down away from view and the earth began to crumble before him. Astonished, he looked towards Anisa who glanced up just as Tom began to scramble to keep from sliding down the growing precipice. Panic seemed to stretch across the distance between them, as Anisa could only cry out, hands outstretched, and watch her beloved tumble over the edge.

A few years ago my pastor here in Italy asked something that has penetrated deeply into my heart.

He asked, “Where is the most dangerous place to be? (regarding relationship with God)…And he gave us a few minutes to consider the answer.

I thought to myself, “Hm… Well, let’s see. I think that the most obvious dangerous place to be is distant from God, not knowing Him, and unsaved. Right?

Wrong.

He said something that startled ME, and I knew it was true.

“The most dangerous place to be is this: When you think you are okay with God, and you are not. (!!!!)

I knew it was true. I have learned many things the hard way. For example: just knowing and living the “right things to say and the right things to do”, won’t save you. Neither will going to church every day of your life, being a good person, giving all you have to the poor, volunteering for all worthy and important causes, giving largely to charitable organizations, or being the nicest, most generous, most loyal, most loving person. (Each is important but will not bring you salvation from sins or get you to heaven.)

The Bible is clear: (my comments in parenthesis)

John 3:16-17
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[f] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

John 14:6
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Ephesians 2:8
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— (being good is not enough, knowing how to say and do the “right” things is not enough… we can do nothing to save ourselves, but we are saved out of HIS love and mercy)

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' ( that does not sound like “in moderation” to me…)

I will tell you honestly. It hurts to see family and friends suffering because they have chosen to walk away from Jesus. I see them struggling through trials and daily life, and I wish I could give them the “will” to love Jesus and live for Him; but, I can’t. I will not say that I have arrived and am just fine now… No, I have to “work out my salvation daily” just like everyone else, but… I know that I find my strength, joy, hope, love, peace, encouragement, and help in serving Jesus, in looking to Him, in seeking after Him, and drawing near to Him.

That is what I know, from personal experience. I know what it feels like to feel far from God. I know what it feels like to lose someone; or to feel overwhelmed in grief, depression or challenges threatening to destroy me. I know failure, but I also know what it feels like to see growth and feel triumph.

This journey is not meant to be walked alone. He wants to walk with you, sometimes carry you, and definitely take you by the hand and guide you, minister to you, provide for you, and just love you.

My son, Luca, just turned 6. I am amazed at how fast time flies. Here is the card I made him. The theme of his party was "Dogs", but I also added the sub-theme of "Bolt". Also, my 10 year old niece made this bottom card,of Bolt's face, for him, with just a little help from her older sister, but it is great, isn't it?

Luca, we are celebrating God's faithfulness to you. We are rejoicing because of this life with which He has blessed you. Let your light shine for Jesus, my son. Let God live and work in you and through you. May God bless you, keep you, make His face shine upon you, be gracious to you, nad give you peace. Amen."

There are seasons of tears that seem too heavy to bear. There are days that seem to never end in their grieving and pain. But I can attest, by personal experience, that God is faithful. He said that He will never give us more than we can bear in His strength, and that He will provide "a way of escape." (Read 1 Corinthians 10:13 for more on that verse. And, if you are not sure how to use a Bible, email me, and it would be a pleasure to clarify on that.)

I was recently reminded of a verse in the Bible that refers to a request by King David to God. David suffered a lot in his life, but he always sought to live for God and please Him in spite of his many mistakes and bad decisions. He was called a "friend" of God because of his willingness to be humble, open, and accept God's discipline.

The verse occurs in the middle of a conversation David is having with God, actually a request for relief from tormentors, which at the time of this prayer, were many. He is overwhelmed with grief, distressed, and he says in Psalm 56:8b...

"You number my wanderings;
Put my tears into Your bottle;
Are they not in Your book?"

I was struck by the image of tears flowing into a bottle to be stored away. God sees our tears. May God help you, to turn your heart to Him, so that He can bring you, me, us, relief in our hard times. May He help us to surrender our hearts, wills, minds to Him so that He can work good things in us, and teach us to trust, love, follow, and serve Him with all of our hearts, souls, minds, and strength.

Trust in, cling to, rely on, and believe in Him, for He cares for you...

Framed And Ready To Hang...

My sister-in-law received the papercuts from our relative, and the whole family loved them. She went out a couple of days after to find frames to suit her decor and the cuts. I think she did a great job.

Here they are, including one I had a hard time downloading...

"Crazy... By Marriage!" is a private joke between her and I. hahahahah!!!

One is missing (the "M"- because my niece took it to hang in her locker at school. It will be returned home early next week for safe keeping. hahaha...).

I am so glad they liked their gifts. Makes my heart glad!!

I am blessed with eight nieces all together. These gifts are for 4 of them. They are the daughters of my husband's brother. A relative left on Thursday to visit the States, and I prepared these as belated, current, or early birthday gifts for them. Even across the miles, we must be a part of their lives. They are such fun, intelligent, and wonderful girls. I miss them greatly, and this is one way that I can show them that.

I have wanted to make a special gift for them and just came up with what I would deem a perfect gift for each of them. It is timeless and is personal. It is sweet and full of whimsy. And, more importantly, it is from my heart.

La Rondine... The Swallowtail

This is a card I made today for a friend's daughter's first birthday card. I was pleased with how it turned out. The colors worked well, and the image turned out so nicely. I really like how the border brought out the colors in the cut (not seen by scan). The dark purple that you see had little leaves cut into the edges and then I placed another red border behind that one.

I was really blessed by what Dave says in this part...

The guiding verse of AMOKArts is 1 Peter 4:10 each one should use whatever gifts he has received to serve others faithfully administering God’s grace in it’s various forms. That’s what we are trying to do here, to help you to use your creative, artistic gifts to serve others and serve the Lord. Some people would say that your artistic abilities are talents and not Spiritual gifts. I would point them to Exodus 35 and 36:

30 Then Moses said to the Israelites, “See, the LORD has chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 31 and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts- 32 to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, 33 to cut and set stones, to work in wood and to engage in all kinds of artistic craftsmanship. 34 And he has given both him and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach others. 35 He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as craftsmen, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them master craftsmen and designers. 1 So Bezalel, Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the LORD has given skill and ability to know how to carry out all the work of constructing the sanctuary are to do the work just as the LORD has commanded.”

Bezalel and Oholiab and the other craftsmen were specifically gifted by God to be artists and it says they received these gifts when they were filled with the Spirit. Where I come from that makes them Spiritual gifts. In the same way I believe God has gifted you with your gifts and talents. Please note the las few words of verse one as they are key. “…to do the work of constructing the sanctuary are to do the work just as the Lord has commanded.” We are to use our gifts he way God intended for the furtherance of His Kingdom.

I hope it blesses your heart as much as it has blessed mine...

2010 Easter Papercut...

Oh, my heart is just overwhelmed. I try to make Easter special every year. Living in a different country where the traditions are not what I have been used to in the past, I have tried to make my own traditions- even wracked my brain trying to come up with ideas to make new, special things to do or create to make the days/events even more special.

This year I managed to do some neat things for Christmas, and I thought that FOR SURE I would be able to come up with some things for Easter as well. But, you know what, Easter snuck up on me... even though I have been counting the weeks and days of its arrival. I still have arrived to the day before, and I still don't know how I want to add some extra spice to the moments I have with my family to make another great memory together.

I ache over it, but, I think that I am also coming to terms with something. It does not matter how I choose to add spice to the day. IT IS IMPORTANT ENOUGH ALL ON ITS OWN!

Woh! Did I really just say that? Yes, I did. You see, we DO want to add so many special details to life, to add glimmer, sparkle, shinyness. It is fun, but, it is also extra. In the end, a day like Christmas or Easter is important because of the REASON why we celebrate it, not because of HOW we celebrate it. (though I am the first to want to add food, decor, or games!!!)

I made this papercut this year for a trade with a blogging friend who asked me to make him one for Easter. When I had completed it, I marvelled. What if I had been one of those women? What would that have been like?

After days of grieving, weeping, and fear... Deciding to go to the tomb to finish preparing the body of my beloved Jesus. Dead! Truly Dead! How could it be? Tears, so many tears.

The walk to the tomb is a long one. Almost numb with an aching heart, swollen eyes, and tired. Just plain tired. So much to look forward to before, or so I had thought. And it all came crashing down when my Jesus- "the Messiah King"- DIED. Oh, the groan of despair... I don't understand.

Finally, I reach the tomb. And the women who are with me stand bewildered, gaping mouths saying nothing. I glance up to see... an Angel confirming with real words that Jesus is not within the dark space. Rather, He is risen just has He said He would.

Oh, the feelings that threaten to succumb my heart. Belief? Disbelief? Fear? Amazed joy?

Is it a dream? Can it be so?

Then a realization... All the words that He shared before seem illuminated in my mind, in my heart, in my soul. He HAD said that He would rise again on the third day. He had said and restated over and over how He would have the victory, and that we could have that victory through Him. We had not understood; but it was coming to pass.

I drop to the dirt and put my hands over my eyes, tears streaming through them, releasing the grief and filling my heart once again with hope AND FAITH. My dear friend calls to me, "Come, we must tell the others!" I just kneel there, stunned and so relieved. Then she reaches behind her to take my hand to prompt me to my feet.

Still pondering what has just happened I hurry away with her, anxious to say the words to another, even just to confirm them to my wary heart. But, I am most anxious to see my Jesus again, for He is alive, we are His friends, He WILL come.

I am still working on the plans for games or a craft to do with my kids. I DO really want it to be fun and memorable for them, in a very sense appealing way. I Do want to eat good food, and just enjoy the day in an extra ordinary way. But, more than anything else, I pray that we may all be anxious to see Jesus! For He is ALIVE!!! Just as He said!!! We must surrender to Him, live for Him, and be His friends, so that one day- not too far away- we CAN see Him again.

9th Birthday Card For a Friend's Son...

My oldest son is currently at a birthday party for his friend, Andrea. Here in Italy, it is pronounced as On-dre-a, and it is a boy's name. Andrea is nine now! What a great age!!

Labours Of Love...

(One of my early cuts, and still one of my favorites...)

It is time... I sit and prepare my tools: paper, scissors, xacto knife, glue, cutting mat, cutting board, pencil, ruler... I breathe and gather my thoughts, ready to concentrate on the task at hand. Seat pulled in to the approprate distance from the table, my hand picks up the pencil and sketches out an image. When satisfied, I begin to cut, carefully, as precisely as possible. My eyes, thoughts, and hands work together to create.

As the forms become more pronounced, my heart leaps with joy, ready to see the birthed images that have come from my concentrated hand. Bit by bit, lines become firm figures, that, when completed, will wait for one more step. Color. As, they glance nakedly and hollowly, their form pleases my eyes because they are mine, but... they are not ready.

Again, one section of space at a time, I select the ideal colors to shroud the bareness. Pushing myself to be patient, I go on, anxious heart beating in anticipation.

A slide of glue to hold the snips in place, layers overlapping layers, and tediously I persevere. Every so often, I take a peak at the object as a whole, hoping it is coming as I envisioned in my mind. Breathing again, I resume my work.

After what seems like a long daydream, I pick up the multi-colored square and scan its every inch. Success!!

There is such pleasure and joy in watching a work of art take form and to see the completed work as a whole... It is even more wonderful to be satisfied that it is perfect for its own existence. Meaning... each piece of original art, is just that, original. It is perfect by its own standards. It requires a clean slate, different from the mentalities that were required for other works. Otherwise it will not be so original.

In the end it is a labour of love, effort, and creative interest.

I have been dwelling on this recently... in regards to my children.

My kids are each individual works of art. They are created, just as we all are, in the image of God, but with a specific purpose that is all their own on this earth.

Sometimes, I lump each of them into one pile and try to train them, nurture them, discipline them in the same way. I am noticing that that is not working so well.

I am seeing that some of my little ones require extra hugs to keep them content, or some extra creative time, or an extra bit of understimulated quiet time. Each requires just a slightly different mixture of care, firmness, and space to be creative to blossom. Some of them would prefer stacking blocks to reading a book, painting to working with playdoh, listening to music to watching tv. Some relish studying mathematics and other dread it and prefer languages. They are an odd combination, and sometimes it is very challenging to get myself in tune with their needs. But... it is not impossible.

I am trying my hardest. There are days when I am just too tired, a bit discouraged, or restless. On these days, this work of being mommy just seems too complicated and rather heavy for me to bear. But then there are days when my kids themselves fill me with just that extra bit of loving care to make me KNOW that everything will be alright. It is when I am having my Quiet Time with Jesus, that does not always come first in my days, that I actually feel so confident that I CAN do it all. It is when I rededicate every moment to my faithful Jesus, that I see that I am NOT alone, that He is faithful to fill me with His strength, hope, creativity, and wisdom.

It is a work that I am very willing to take on, because I love my family. I am grateful to have my five chickadees. And I am blessed to be called their mom. If I focus only on the hard moments, I will miss out on their childhood. If I only have my pity parties and dwell only how how little energy I have, then I will only take my days for the little I feel that they are worth in that moment.

I want to Relax and Enjoy my family... before my little ones are old enough NOT to want me to cuddle with them, read to them, or help them with their homework. I want to love on them and cherish them before they move on to working in jobs, having girlfriends, or so many other things that will naturally become distraction to my time with them.

The days sometimes drag along, especially during desert challenge days, but... looking at the grand picture, TIME IS FLYING BY. I miss my days. My babies are no longer babies. They are miniature men and a petite little lady learning to be themselves.

I want to take pleasure in them for who they are. They are the color of my days. What inspiration will I have for my art once they are gone? For they have soaked into so much of who I am and what I do.

All I know.. is that I want them to remember my efforts, my time, my love for them, with pleasure and joy. I want to be remembered as their mommy who loved to add spice to their days, who tried her best to just love them the best I possibly could.

Being a mommy is a labour of love... Sometimes these little works of art, hurt me, make me feel underappreciated, or sometimes not appreciated at all. Sometimes I feel that way about my whole world, but... I am learning this: my responsibility is to nurture, teach, create, love, care, hold, hug, kiss, play, etc... with all my heart. I literally am helping to form a new piece of art. I am not their creator, but I am here to teach these created about their Creator. I am here to direct their little hearts to the One who will fill their days with color and lead them on their journey into life.

I am to take each day, and the moments scattered within, and glue them together with memories that I hope will last for the rest of their lives. I am to help to cut out that behaviour that can harmful to them and encourage them to do right. I am to take them by the hand, lead them through childhood; into tween-hood, teenage-hood and then, finally, to release them into adulthood.

They are works of art, my labours of love.

Jonah Personal Challenge...

I was reading the story of Jonah in the Bible. I was struck by some of the imagery, and knew that I had to try to make a papercut of the verse that specifically said, "I went down to the moorings of the mountains..."

My mind imagined that as if he had gone so far down into the waters that he landed at the feet of the mountains on the other side of the world.

It is a remarkable story of one man's disobedience to God, the consequences of his disobedience, God's grace, and His tremendous patience with Jonah, but it is also how He is like that with all of us.

May this cut be a reminder to us, to you... Don't run from God. He always knows where you are. And He loves you immensely. Rather, allow yourself to be honest, open, and available to God, and He will bless you in amazing ways. Trusting and surrendering to Him is not weakness. Rather it is strength. It is where you find untapped reserves of the necessities we have for life. We find unconditionaly love, receive peace that passes all understanding, joy unspeakable, and hope. "The joy of the Lord is our strength." It has been mine. And I hope that you will allow Him to touch your heart so you can also experience His wonderful, and amazing love for you.

February 24, 2010...The Waiting...

I have been doing some browsing on the topic of Steampunk, and was inspired to try my hand at doing a cut touching on the subject. There is a very busy clock, which you may notice is not right. I made the mistake of drawing the cut correctly on the back, which made the cut show up backwards when completely finished, but... it suits the cut somehow. Like a symbol of going back in time? Anyhow, I am happy with the result.

I made the swirly inner parts of the edge of the clock, hoping they would resemble, somehow, the Edison lightbulb, and lightning coming from them as symbols of electricity. The part with writing in it was actually a tracing from a metal piece that fell off of a bureau of ours. The lady is leaning against the wall... waiting. For what? What do YOU think?

As I do not have copper or lots of metal looking paper, I did the best I can with colors resembling them. Bronze, copper, and such metals were big at the time.

A bit of trivia... For the Roman numeral of 4 we use this symbol "IV", right? Did you know that there are clocks, and this is perfectly acceptable, that have "IIII" on them? Click here and go to the section labled "IIII and IV" to see why.

My friend and distant cousin to my husband, Gabriella, recently had a baby. This is our gift to her... I wanted to make something that would be used even once she is no longer an infant. The main colors of her nursery are so wonderful: Red, Lilac, and Fuchsia. Aren't they so bright and beautiful? I hope this will fit right in. :-)

Love is a journey I have CHOSEN to make... even knowing the risks. I have worked so hard to hope and joy in our life together, to grow in faith, and to nurture each seed of potential, in the kids and in you, because I... care.

Sometimes it hurts to love so much. The vulnerability it puts us at sometimes leaves me feeling very uncomfortable, but... I have chosen to journey, to grow, to heal, and to trust in and surrender to our Lord on behalf our marriage. Because growing together is better than having a life free of challenge. February 6, 2010... My Son's Journal With A New Collaged Face...

So, a week or so ago my son begged me for a real journal, not just a notebook to write in. Since I write in one myself, I thought it might be a great opportunity to teach him the joy and blessing of the written art and expression. I went through my things and came across an old daytimer that I was planning on using for a journal myself. It has great lines down each page, and the dates can be covered over or ignored. It was a little smaller than I preferred, but I also knew that I would not buy one for the same purpose if I did not have to. After my son asked me for one, I decided it would be the perfect size for him. He saw its black, fake leatheryness and asked if we could put something nicer on the front. "Of course, just let me think on it"...

I have kept bits and pieces of paper for-EVER. I see an ad or an image in a newspaper or magazine, and if it is allowed, I take it and put it in my stash. I have a pretty good collection that I am very careful about how they are used. After going through, I found bits that I just knew I had to give to this project. Art from old catalogues that speak of God's faithfulnes to us, encouragements, funny images, even thought provoking images... they are on the cover or scattered within on different pages. I presented it to him, and... He loved it!! He keeps going back to look through it- as do each of the kids.

I love to make something new from something old. I also love when it can bring a smile to someone's face, and when it can encourage their hearts. Is there something you can do for someone else that may have the same effect? It is worth acting out on that. Life is short. Make the most of it!

The other day I was pleasantly surprised to receive a long-awaited item in the mail. Do you remember that I told you that I was to have a project printed in a book? Well, here it is!!!

The Book is called Exploring The Latest Trends In Mixed Media Art, Volume II: Recycled, Reinspired, Reinvented and it is by Sherre Hulbert and Cynthia Powell.

Not only are their art pieces showcased in this book, but so are the projects of several guests artists, including ME!!

My thoughts regarding the book…

"I love to have so many craft possibilities at my fingertips. It’s overwhelming… all of this creative fun!

The creators of this book, Sherre Hulbert and Cynthia Powell, are talented enough that they could have put this whole book together based on only their own works. I am honored, though, to be counted amidst the guest artists and to be part of this project. My own work seems so “simple” in comparison to the others’, but it IS different from what is already presented.

Almost every project is eye candy for my creative soul. Each makes me want to create, create, create, and to go through my packratted stash, to study and find something new and different to make. (And to live in a craft and hobby store.
;-) )

The pieces used to detail certain projects make me long to see them in person: to flip through the altered books; to touch the handles and hardware; to open the decorated boxes; to hear the jingle of the fascinating, attractive jewelry; and to take my ordinary, everyday, seemingless “junk” and use it to form a new thing of beauty. There are many supplies of which I am not familiar. They make me “itch” to experiment with new mediums.

I love the mystery, nostalgia, creativity, delicacy, and diversity of the projects presented in this book. They each make me want to see… MORE!

I would gather that the basic theme of this book could be “Beauty is all around us. Gather its bits and pieces, and create something uniquely yours.” And perhaps, “Don’t be afraid to share your ideas with other thing-creators.” :-)

I tried to list some of my most favourite projects, ones that “called out” to me for me to try my hand at, but… the list was too long and ended up being at least every other project. LOL… :-)

As stated in the title, there are three sections: Recycled, Reinspired, and Reinvented. I assure you that some of these ideas are simply mind opening. The use of objects like rusted washers, baby blocks, floppy disks, and plastic tubing, just to name a few, just might make you rethink throwing said items away. The desire to rediscover a use for old objects might become very overwhelming, but it can also be quite rewarding, too, as you watch a simple idea blossom into a display to use for a gift or to use in your own home.

January 30, 2010... My Niece's 18th Birthday Gift 1 of 2...

This one was intended as a family gift to my niece, but I over experimented with watercolors and felt it took away from the original desired look. I did get the sunset, though!! So I did this one and wrote it out as if it came from the kids- complete with handprints within.

To my dear niece, N. I love you very much. May the Lord fill your heart with His presence and bless you throughout this year.

January 25, 2010... And The Brainstorming Continues...

Just an update on life... One of my kids passed through the chicken pox two weeks ago, and now I have two that have just come out with it. I feel like I am more than half way now. Sort of. But the waiting has been more stressful for me than them just getting it. Two more to wait on. :-)

With that in mind, I am brainstorming for a few different things: three new baby cards, my son's belated birthday card, and my niece's 18th birthday card. I am sure that I will add to that list as the weeks go on.

For now, know that I have plans to show you more.

January 23, 2010... 3 John Verse 2 For A 50th Birthday...

3 Giovanni verso 2... (aka 3 John verse 2 says, "Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.")

One of my husband's, I guess, third cousin's is celebrating his 50th birthday tonight. This is his card. He is a carpenter by trade, and I tried to make things familiar to that line of work. Wood, wood, wood is presented in the tree and the bench... and I used shiny silver paper for the hammers, the saw, and the file to make it a little bit more realistic. I also used an authentic piece of sandpaper to represent itself. :-)

January 5, 2010 Personal Art Challenge... God Is Bigger Than...

It has been a year now since one of my family members and I gave each other a special challenge... to creatively, artfully express the phrase, "God is bigger than..."

It took me a whole year to come up with this idea, which is perfect, I think. It is just what I felt to express but did not know how to do sooner.

M, this is for you. I love you dearly, and I so desire God to touch your heart to draw closer to Him, to trust in Him, to surrender to Him. He can heal our hearts, no matter how marred, scarred, hard, or walled up they are. We just need to cry out to Him to heal us, help us, and He will. He is the only One who can make "beauty from the ashes" of our lives. He is the only One who will love you unconditionally, no matter what, who desires to be your God and also your Best Friend.

Now, I wrote to M, but I have exposed my words for you all to read in hopes that they might encourage you to think about them. I hope you do...

Second... My oldest niece will be 18 in January. Here in Italy the 18th birthday party is the big one and not the 16th. I offered to make her the invitation, and this is what I have come up with. She seems to like it.

December 28, 2009 Hello Kitty as... The Cat In The Hat...

This weekend was my daughter's 4th birthday. The theme was "The Cat In The Hat and Other Cats, Too", but it ended up mostly being the Cat In The Hat and Hello Kitty, which was fine, because they are both fun. My daughter loved the very idea of having cats all around, and I surprised her with some fun activities all related to "cat-ness". With that in mind, I thought of how I could make her birthday card a good balance between the two characters, and this is what I came up with .

M, mamma loves you so much! I hope you had as much fun at your party as I did getting it all together. Hugs to you, my sweet girl!!!

(I am a little disappointed because I messed up Hello Kitty's nose and eye placement, so she does not look much like herself. Oh well, it was intended to be her.)
